For New Year’s Eve, staying in is the new going out! There’s something wonderfully cosy and meaningful about seeing in the new year surrounded by your favourite adults at home — no crowded bars, no overpriced drinks, no freezing queues in the cold. Just good company, great food, and an evening filled with games, conversation and laughter.

If you’re hosting at home this year, you don’t need anything elaborate to make the night memorable. A handful of easy, engaging games is all it takes to keep everyone entertained and make the countdown feel special. Whether you’re planning a lively gathering with friends or a relaxed night in with family, games are the perfect way to break the ice, spark laughter, and create those little moments that everyone remembers long after midnight.
In this blog, I’m sharing some of my favourite New Year–themed games to play at home. They’re all simple to learn, require minimal equipment, and can be enjoyed by absolutely anyone — making them ideal for filling the final hours of the year with fun and connection. Let the countdown begin!
1. New Year’s Resolution Guess
Equipment: Slips of paper, pens, a bowl or hat
A simple, upbeat guessing game that gets everyone talking. Give each player a slip of paper and a pen. Everyone writes down a set number of New Year’s resolutions they’d like to commit to — anything from sincere (“Run a marathon”) to silly (“Finally learn to whistle”). Fold the slips and drop them into a bowl.
Players take turns drawing a resolution and reading it aloud. The group must guess who wrote it. You can keep it relaxed or award points for correct guesses. It’s a great way to break the ice and discover who’s dreaming big for the year ahead.
2. Countdown Balloon Pop
Equipment: Balloons, slips of paper, pens, string or tape
This game builds excitement as the night progresses. Before the event, write challenges, dares, or prompts on slips of paper (“Show your best dance move”, “Share your highlight of the year”). Place one inside each balloon, inflate them, and label the balloons with times (e.g., 9 pm, 10 pm, 11 pm).
Hang the balloons around the room. At each marked time, pop the corresponding balloon and complete the challenge inside. It keeps energy high and ensures the countdown is full of laughs. The midnight balloon can contain a group moment, such as everyone belting out Auld Lang Syne together.
Variation: You can have 2 variations of the balloon challenges, one naughty and one nice! Mix all the balloons up so when you choose one to pop, you don’t know if you are getting naughty or nice.
3. Musical Resolutions
Equipment: Music player, chairs (one fewer than players)
A New Year spin on musical chairs. Arrange chairs in a circle and start the music. Players walk around until the music stops, then scramble for a seat. The player left standing must share a resolution or something they hope to achieve in the new year.
Remove one chair each round until only two players are left. The final winner earns the title of “Resolution Champion”. It’s lively, light-hearted, and perfect for keeping everyone active during the party.
4. Resolution Fishbowl
Equipment: Slips of paper, pens, a bowl, a one-minute timer
A three-round party classic adapted for New Year’s resolutions. Each player writes three common or obscure resolutions on separate slips of paper (“Go to the gym”, “Save money”, “Travel more”). Fold all the slips and place them in a bowl. Teams then compete across three rounds, with the same set of resolutions becoming progressively harder to describe.

Round 1: Description
A player from Team A draws a slip, one at a time, and has one minute to get their team to guess as many resolutions as possible using verbal clues only. They must not say the resolution itself, any part of it, or use rhymes. Each correct guess earns one point. As soon as a correct guess is made, they draw a new slip. When the minute is up, the turn passes to the other team. Keep going until all the slips are used up. Now return all the slips to the bowl.
Round 2: One Word
Same as before, but this time, players may give only a single word as the clue — no saying what’s on the slip though. The team continues guessing and drawing new slips until the minute ends, scoring one point per correct guess. Swap after 1 minute and keep going until all slips are used up. They then go back into the bowl at the end of the round.
Round 3: Charades
Same again, but this time, players act out the resolutions without speaking or making sounds. A point is awarded for each correct guess within a minute. If a player speaks or makes a noise, their turn ends immediately. Keep going until all the slips are used up.
After all three rounds, tally the scores. The team with the highest total wins. Fast, funny, and increasingly chaotic, it’s a brilliant way to poke fun at classic resolutions while competing together.
5. Two Resolutions and a Lie
Equipment: None (optional slips of paper)
A New Year twist on the classic bluffing game. Each player thinks of two genuine resolutions and one invented one. They present all three, and the group must identify the lie. Players win points for correct guesses and bonus points if their bluff succeeds.
It’s a brilliant conversation starter and often reveals surprising hopes and goals for the coming year.
6. Year in Review Bingo
Equipment: Printable bingo cards, pens, list of events from the past year
Create bingo cards filled with notable events from the year — world events or personal moments, if it’s a close group. As the host reads them out, players mark off matching squares. The first to complete a line calls out “Happy New Year!” and wins. You can carry on for a full house.
It’s nostalgic, social, and a lovely way to look back on the year together.
7. Happy New Year
Equipment: None
A quick but very entertaining guessing game. Choose one player to sit in a chair facing away from the group. The remaining players quietly form a line behind them in a random order.
The first person in line steps forward and says, “Happy New Year!” while disguising their voice as much as possible. The seated player must guess who is speaking. If their guess is correct, that player moves to one side of the chair (still out of sight); if incorrect, they move to the opposite side.
Each player has a turn until everyone has spoken. When all guesses are complete, the person in the chair turns around to see how many they got right. It’s harder than it sounds — can anyone identify the whole group correctly?
